DIVERS come from all over the world to experience Sodwana Bay in the iSimangaliso Marine Protected Area (MPA). A consortium of South African organisations will be the first globally to celebrate a day dedicated to the conservation of MPAs. There are 42 MPAs along the South African coastline, which provide crucial safe havens for animals and plants in the ocean, and also support human communities. To highlight the importance of MPAs, several organisations, including the
South African Association for Marine Biological Research, Two Oceans Aquarium, Dyer Island Conservation Trust and Wildtrust, have designated August 1 as MPA day.
