The Mercury E-dition

Did the generation of 1976 bring the desired change?

A LEARNED friend asked me, in response to what I posted online, whether the 1976 generation of youth succeeded in the trajectory of change and reform that was heroically started by them, 45 years on? My response follows at the tail end of this brief.

As Salaamu Alaikum warakmatulahi wa barkatahu. A shout out of peace and blessings to all. I pray that everyone precious to this brave nation is doing well by the grace and with the assistance of Allah. We are back on level 3 which calls for more sacrifices to be made.

Remember the sacrifices made 45 years ago on June 16, 1976, by a generation that became gatvol about the level of complacency on the part of its elders who were buckling under the yoke of apartheid.

That sacrifice must be remembered and the struggle to achieve freedom and prosperity to its fullest extent must carry on.

Truth be acknowledged, my learned friend, I believe that that generation and their immediate successors did that, until they donned the garb of parliamentarians and got captured by all the power games that replaced the Struggle. And we who elected and who tolerate them 45 years on are vicariously accountable too.

Down with corruption, down! A luta continua!
