Need TRC-style probe into racial tensions

I WATCHED a video recording where Julius Malema clearly threatens violent outcomes if the police don’t apprehend those who were allegedly responsible for the vigilante-styled killing of alleged looters in Phoenix two weeks ago when hell was literally in session. Permit me to address this letter to him and all like-minded people.

I totally agree with the principle of the rule of law and order and that without that we have a revolution which then degenerates to people engaging in acts of abomination such as we have witnessed.

Yes, Mr Malema, the SAPS must investigate and call all perpetrators to account for what went down during the unrest and this must factor in those who on camera participated in the wanton looting and destruction of property and livelihoods while the SAPS became the spectators.

There must be a full investigation and not targeted ones where an identifiable minority is considered the chief suspect in the context of allegations of racism. I have been pleading for a TRC-format meeting involving all South Africans who must meet and find a way towards each other in the spirit of reconciliation. No political parties or politicians must be involved directly but ordinary civilians.

Targeting South African Indians is not the way; targeting the overall causes and symptoms of racism through such a gathering is worth exploring.
